2014 Ryder Cup Thoughts

Sorry for the lateness of this post on the 2014 Ryder Cup.  As you know, I usually like to post on Monday mornings, but I was up in Chicago playing two Top 100’s!  My wife got me an awesome opportunity to play one of the courses.  She’s the best!  Look forward to those reviews coming up in the following months.

Alright, on to the Ryder Cup.  I haven’t been able to watch much coverage this week leading up to the matches, but I would imagine it is similar to what we have seen in the last year.  There has been a palpable sentiment that we are massive underdogs.  I think that is a good thing!  I think there a few points to discuss before the matches begin.

The captain’s picks don’t merit any more discussion.  The only one that was a surprise to me was Webb Simpson.  Keegan and Hunter made sense to me from a pairing and recent form standpoint, respectively.  Webb’s form has not been there and I did not agree with Captain Watson’s reasoning that he plays well in the fall.  I hope I’m wrong.

The underdog factor is huge in my opinion.  We have nothing to lose going into the competition.  No one seems to be expecting anything from the USA, which should help them relax.  This could be crucial for the rookies on hostile turf.  I also like the fact that we have some new blood on the team without the recent scars of losing to the Europeans.  The Americans must hope that those two factors come through positively.

The funny thing about all the analysis is that the Cup is usually decided by the same thing every time.  Want to take a guess?  PUTTING!  The recent European dominance has been highlighted by Poulter and everyone else making putt after putt.  If the USA can make some putts we will have as good a chance as ever to win.  If we putt like Sunday at Medinah then they will win the 2014 Ryder Cup.

GO USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
