2015 Open Championship Picks

Yet again I haven’t done much research for my 2015 Open Championship picks.  I have found I usually make my best picks when I have less data.  I have been watching golf and keeping up so I am not totally in the dark!

Unfortunately, Rory will not be a part of the group this time due to his untimely soccer injury.  He would definitely be in the mix if he was playing due to his length being a perfect fit for the Old Course at St. Andrews.  I am going to go with Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson as my foursome for the 2015 Open Championship.  I believe the winner comes out of that group.  As for a dark horse, how about Raphael Jacquelin.  Let’s get into the why on these guys.

Jordan Spieth: He needs no explanation.  He is going for the third leg of the Grand Slam.  His game is in top form and he is the best putter in the world right now.  He hits it long enough and is dead-on with distance control.  The only thing that concerns me with him is the lack of links golf experience.  Hopefully, it won’t hurt his chances.

Dustin Johnson: If anyone can come back from the debacle at Chambers Bay it is Dustin.  He hits the ball so long and straight that he could really tear the Old Course apart.  With greens slower than the PGA Tour’s fastest, St. Andrews should set up perfectly for DJ.

Rickie Fowler: Can he play links golf?  Well, he just won the AAM Scottish Open, so I think so!  His game is rounding into form at the perfect time.  He seemed to relish playing different kinds of shots at Gullane.  I think the US Open performance was an aberration.

Henrik Stenson: Good driving, check.  Good iron play, check.  Putting, to be determined.  Like every tournament, it comes down to putting.  Similar to Dustin, I like his chances at Open courses where the greens aren’t as glassy as some in America.  Look for big Swede to make a run at ending his country’s drought in men’s majors.

Raphael Jacquelin:  I am buying the performance at Gullane.  He almost jarred his second at 18 to tie Rickie.  He is a wily vet who knows his way around a golf course.  I’m going with recent form and good mojo.  He is in his 40’s so maybe he is the younger version of the old guys who have contended lately in Opens.

I love all the majors.  The Open is special because it is a different style of golf than the other three.  It’s always fun to get up really early and watch the coverage.  I hope you enjoy the tournament and we get a thrilling finish.
