Interesting Course Names Played

I was inspired while reading Mike from 36aday’s review of Smuggler’s Glen in Canada to compile a list of my most interesting golf course names I’ve played.  Check out Mike’s review here.

You may be asking what is the criteria?  I would respond with, get out of here with that nonsense.  That’s not to be mean, but more to say that there are no criteria.

If the name strikes my fancy I’ll list it below.  A good example of something that would not go on the list…Oak Hill.  Great golf course, superb clubhouse, tons of history, and all of the trappings, but the name doesn’t wow me.  Got it?  Good, let’s get started.

I didn’t set a number to get to, but rather went through my entire list of courses played and made eliminations until I got to these 23.  I’ve removed identifiers like “Country Club” or “Golf Club” to have the course represented by its shorter name since that is the part that interests me.

These are in no particular order the most interesting golf course names I’ve played.

  1. Pasatiempo
  2. Rooster Run
  3. Fossil Trace
  4. Ballyneal
  5. Cateechee
  6. Currahee
  7. Cuscowilla
  8. The Harvester
  9. Coffin
  10. Crooked Stick
  11. Purgatory
  12. Valhalla
  13. Eastward Ho!
  14. Abenaqui
  15. Cochecho
  16. Pound Ridge
  17. Dormie
  18. Tobacco Road
  19. Verdict Ridge
  20. Old MacDonald
  21. Aronimink
  22. Musgrove Mill
  23. Golden Horseshoe (Gold)

So what does this list say about me?  A few things…which I will show in ANOTHER DAMN LIST!

  1. I like Native American names.  Maybe some deep subconscious connection to my family in New England. which is filled with places with Native American names.
  2. For the most part, I like names that don’t fit into the normal nature categories.  Names with trees, land types, water types, and the like are fine but don’t make it on this list for me.
  3. The name will not overcome a bad course.  I like all the names here, but don’t love all the courses.  DUH!

So what are some of your favorite course names?  Keep it to one’s you’ve played and sound off in the comments.

  1. Thanks for the shout out Jimmy and I’m glad my post could inspire the way it did; it is a unique name indeed. I’ll read the full post soon, reflection other names and share some other contenders.
    Cheers, Mike.
