I was down to play Wyboo Golf Club after a summer working in the junior golf camps at Pinehurst.  After a summer spent practicing and playing in my “job” I was trying to qualify for the SC State Amateur.  This was obviously in the days where competing was still important to me.  It didn’t go well!  Now I am much more content to play for some money in match play or with a gimmie here or there.

Wyboo Golf Club is conveniently located about 10 miles off of I-95.  As I remember the pricing is very affordable and well worth your time if you’re in the area.

Hole 1 – 441 yards – Par 4

The first tee shot is tough with water down the right.  Due to the length of the hole driver will be in your hand and you need to be accurate.  Favor the left side.

From the left side, the view of the angle is below.  Avoid the bunkers and you’ll be in great shape.

Hole 2 – 171 yards – Par 3

Not too much to this hole strategy-wise.  The water is not in play and the small bunker is the only real defense.  Pick a target and hit it.

Hole 3 – 445 yards – Par 4

Again, not much strategy on this hole.  Trees line both sides and demand a straight drive.  Length is preferred too.

Hole 4 – 375 yards – Par 4

This hole is a dogleg right with trees guarding the right side.  You can see the beginning of the sand that will extend to a large waste area you can see in the second photo.

Below is the view as you make the turn.  The large fairway bunker is the main hazard for the tee shot.

Hole 5 – 524 yards – Par 5

The fairway width allows you to pick a line based on your abilities.  Stay away from the trees on each side.

There is plenty of room out there as seen in the photo below.

Your eyes on the approach are drawn to the large bunker on the right as well as the water hazard.  With the hazards you have to favor the left side.

Hole 6 – 385 yards – Par 4

This hole is not overly long, but there is water trouble up the right side.  A good line is down the left side with a slight fade.

Water also comes in to play on the left side.  You can see that view below.

Hole 7 – 399 yards – Par 4

This is a slight bender to the left.  A large water hazard starts at a distance where some players may land their drives.  The hazard is on the left and continues up to the green to influence the approach.

Hole 8 – 191 yards – Par 3

Plenty of water lurks here to test you.  It is short left and short right.

This view gives you a good representation of the water.  A solid middle or long iron is needed.

Hole 9 – 538 yards – Par 5

This big dogleg right will be difficult if you are wayward.  A bunker sits on the right side of the fairway.  Water is on each side of the fairway just past the landing area.

Hole 10 – 368 yards – Par 4

The is a mild dogleg left.  As the hole begins to turn there is a water hazard on the right side that extends all the way to the green.  You can go with three wood here.

The green, seen below, is quite narrow and difficult to hit.

Hole 11 – 523 yards – Par 5

This double bender has plenty of room off the tee.  Trees down the left will provide some obstacles, but you can spray it here a bit.  No water changes up the theme we have seen so far.

Hole 12 – 379 yards – Par 4

A few bunkers and a straight hole make this one somewhat boring.  The trees though add an unnecessary challenge.  A good drive up the left with a fade could clip trees, which I don’t view as a good thing.

Hole 13 – 216 yards – Par 3

This might be the most difficult par 3.  It is long with water all down the left that goes right up to the green.

For a longer hole, the green is not very big.  A par here will be a good accomplishment.

Hole 14 – 442 yards – Par 4

There is water, as you can see, but it really isn’t in play.  Other than that the hole is straight with a bit of sand.  Not much to it.

Hole 15 – 567 yards – Par 5

This is a long hole that will take most three shots to reach.  It turns to the left around the small number of trees on that side.  If you can hug the left side with a draw you will be in the best position.

Hole 16 – 373 yards – Par 4

This hole is straightaway.  With the trees, a lesser club may make sense for accuracy.  Great photo from Brian with the sun coming in.

Hole 17 – 178 yards – Par 3

Not much here on one of flattest pieces of the property.  A few bunkers guard the right side of the green, but otherwise not much defense here.

Hole 18 – 393 yards – Par 4

The final hole really opens up with very little tree interference.  There are a couple of fairway bunkers up the left.  A solid drive favoring the right side will leave you in position to birdie the final hole.

For the money, Wyboo Golf Club is a great track.  It is quite affordable.  I remember it being in good shape and from Brian’s photos that was the case in recent years as well.  It will test you with some difficult driving holes and plenty of water.  If you’re in the area give it a try.
