I write this with a heavy heart because my grandfather passed last week. This was both a sad affair and a blessing as he was 92 years old and had been in declining health for a while. Thankfully, his mind was still sharp basically until the very end.
Grampa was the one who got me started in golf back at the tender age of nine. He told me it was a way to keep me out of trouble. While I never thought I was in danger of getting into any trouble, I am so glad that he put a club in my hands. It sparked a love affair with the sport that burns to this day.
I will always remember our time spent at Candia Woods in the New Hampshire summers when I was learning the game. We didn’t always see eye to eye on things, but he was always there for guidance. While not a great golfer, he taught me the etiquette of the game and how to handle myself on the course. I’d like to think of my behavior when I play is a good reflection on him.
I got to spend plenty of time with him when I spent all my summers in New Hampshire until I was 17. It was and is a place that always helps me relax. I hate that I won’t see him there anymore, but it will always be filled with memories of him and my Grammy.
He loved his wife, Aline, more than anything. She left us over 10 years ago. I know Gramps is happy that he can join her again and no longer suffer. I’m comforted by my belief that they are together again. Goodbye, Grampa.
Please accept my sincere condolences, Jimmy.
Thanks for sharing your story of golfing with him in New Hampshire. I hope the next round brings you peace and good memories, and some birdies in his honour!
Cheers, Mike
Thanks Mike!
Sorry for you loss, Jimmy. Your grandpa’s spirit will live on in you as you conduct yourself as a gentleman on and off the golf course.
