Bobby Jones Golf Course may seem like it only has nine holes when you look out over the property. However, through some clever golf course architecture, the course is reversible, allowing for 18 holes of play.
The original course was the first public course in Atlanta but over time it had fallen out of favor. In response, a foundation was put together to refurbish the course. Over $23,000,000 was raised from individuals and businesses to accomplish this goal.
As a result, you see a lot of sponsorship around the course which is a bit odd if you are not ready for it.
The course features instruction and tennis in addition to the golf course. It’s a real treat to have this all essentially in downtown Atlanta.
Being so close to the city, Bobby Jones gets great views of the Atlanta skyline.
The greens have some wild slopes in them and will keep you entertained all day. Depending on the day you play, you play one routing. On our visit, we were playing the Magnolia setup.
While the course is all about new ideas, in practice this doesn’t always happen. The pace can be slow and I’ve heard of some overzealous marshals killing the vibe.
It would be nice if a trailblazing course could invite more new ideas. Let groups bigger than 4 out at certain times and really emphasize the fun.
If you’re in Atlanta, I definitely recommend checking out Bobby Jones Golf Course. Either routing will make for an enjoyable day.
