I am writing this as the 2021 Solheim Cup is wrapping up. The European team is well on their way to a comfortable win. Hats off to them as they played great all week. That is not why I am writing this today. There are a few thoughts I wanted to share about the event and women’s golf in general.
The US team did not play their best or like they would have wanted. But a really cool stat is that 7 of the 12 players are the children of immigrants (Harigae, Kang, Khang, J Korda, N Korda, Noh, Salas) . America has its problems and because I love it I want those problems to be addressed. But it has long been a place people want to be. I was thrilled to cheer for this team of first generation Americans.
Team Europe is full of fun players as well. I’ve come to be a fan of Madelene Sagstrom through her connection with No Laying Up. I’ve also enjoyed watching Nordqvist, Boutier, and others. I’ll add Leona Maguire to that list after watching her stellar play.
If you’ve been hesitant to watch women’s golf in the past, give it a chance.
The common refrain is saying the game is so much more relatable than the game played on the PGA Tour. I don’t agree with saying it’s relatable since these women are way, way, way better than all of us amateurs will ever be. The game is more comprehensible though. The ball doesn’t go 300+ on every tee and mid-irons are relevant (hybrids too).
I enjoyed the 2021 Solheim Cup despite the result. Looking forward to the next edition.
