I typically stay away from the Columbia area as a Clemson Tiger 😉 and that is especially true in the middle of the summer. You see, Columbia is probably the hottest part of our state and July can be sweltering.
When a good friend is involved in an event and it’s a group of my No Laying Up friends, I will put aside my usual tendencies. So I headed down to the Country Club of Lexington to play in a quota game with about 40 folks.
We were actually blessed with a warm day as opposed to an oppressively hot one. Since this was a day for fun, I didn’t have the camera out on every hole. The pictures I did get will give you a feel for the course.
There are many elevated greens and the course played longer than the scorecard yardage. The greens were running quick and overall the course was in good shape for the tough summer time conditions.
Let’s take a look at a few of the holes at the Country Club of Lexington. Below is the opening tee shot of the par five first hole. A lake cuts in on the left and affects anyone laying up.
The second par five on the front can be seen below. There used to be large tree near the bunker on the right that made this a tougher tee shot.
Below is the approach to the tenth green. I hadn’t seen ponds on different levels like this before and I thought it was a unique look. This green is quite sloped from left to right as I saw when my pulled approach rolled about 25 feet towards the hole.
Some turtle friends popped up to say hello as I was walking by one of the ponds!
The par 3s on the back on quite long. I hit 7-wood and 3-wood into each of them. The one below has a creek just short of the green.
The photo below is the short par 4 twelfth.
Below is another short par four on the back, number 15. The bunkers are in play and I had an awkward shot to the raised green with trouble long.
The finishing hole is a long par five that played directly into the wind. Between that and the hill this shot played at least 40 yards longer than the stated yardage.
I really enjoyed the round at the Country Club of Lexington. It’s a good mix of challenge for better players and playability for your regular members. When you add in smooth and fast greens, there isn’t much more you can ask for in a golf course.
Thanks to David for running the event and Luke for helping out. Thanks to No Laying Up for providing this community of people I never would’ve met otherwise!
