My Online Golf Communities

I’ve talked in the past about The Refuge, also known as the No Laying Up message board.  The engagement and friends I’ve gotten out of that place has been more than I ever would have imagined.  Especially as a self-proclaimed anti-message board guy.  Well that isn’t the only place I get my golf fix online.  These other online golf communities have mostly popped up from The Refuge, but they merit mentioning on their own.

WhatsApp

Privacy concerns are mainly a myth in today’s world.  So a few groups still use this.  A great group of people in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia keep a lively chat going about all things.  Funny enough, golf is barely a topic.  Sports, college football, college basketball, politics, world events, and the like are discussed.  For the majority it is civil, which is a welcome event in today’s day and age.

Slack

This is where I interact with my New England folks.  With roots in the area it’s always good to hear from these guys.  The viewpoint is different from what I see day to day in South Carolina and I appreciate that.  I can also get my fill of Boston sports talk, not to mention New England golf courses.  I’m making it a goal in 2022 to play with more members of this group.

Discord

Me and my Zoom friends hang out here.  I’ve mentioned this crew before, but we’ve been talking weekly on Zooms since early in the pandemic.  Making friends across the continent has been an unintended godsend during a very rough time.

We have good conversations here between Zoom sessions.  Like the other chats, the topics run the gamut.  You never know what you are gonna get.

I’m thankful for all of the people in these online golf communities.  It’s guaranteed we will not agree on everything, but it’s so rare that it turns nasty.  I love that I have a big new group of people to play golf with that I otherwise wouldn’t be privileged to have.
