Next up in my New England itinerary was Webhannet Golf Club. Through the generosity of one of the many golfers I’ve gotten to meet through various means, I was able to join a group for a morning tee time to see this old beauty. This course dates back to the turn of the twentieth century and sits close to the ocean at Kennebunk Beach.
The course isn’t long by modern standards, but there are plenty of interesting shots to keep you entertained throughout the round. Since this was a casual round, I didn’t get photos of every hole. However, I think you will definitely get the feel for the place. Let’s get into it.
Hole 1 – 377 yards – Par 4 – Straightaway
The first hole plays just like its name suggests. If you avoid the tree on the right and the practice area to the left, the approach shot is pretty simple.
Hole 2 – 330 yards – Par 4 – Burnside
Be sure to ask any locals in your group for the line on this tee shot. The main objective is getting past the trees on the left so the second shot is unobstructed.
Hole 3 – 238 yards – Par 3 – Needles’ Eye
For any length course, this is a brute of a par three. It plays slightly downhill but that’s about the only break you get.
Hole 5 – 174 yards – Par 3 – Oak Knoll
I missed the fourth hole so we have back to back photos of par threes. This one is an easier length than the last but you don’t want to miss long or left here.
Hole 7 – 402 yards – Par 4 – Challenge
The seventh is one of the toughest holes at Webhannet Golf Club. You will need a solid drive in the fairway to have a good chance at par or better.
Hole 10 – 420 yards – Par 4 – Ruthless
The generous fairway here promotes big swings with the driver. An elevated green that is obscured from view makes for a tricky approach shot.
Hole 11 – 147 yards – Par 3 – Willows
This short par three begs for an accurate tee shot. There is some room up there to miss, but this is a good birdie opportunity.
Hole 13 – 379 yards – Par 4 – Eastward HO
Take note of the yardage for the hazard so you know what to do from the tee. Big hitters can carry it but others might need to lay back. From there, the approach shot plays to a very large green.
Hole 14 – 482 yards – Par 5 – Uplands
This is a visually difficult tee shot for those of us that move it right to left. If you have the opposite ball flight or can manufacture it, take advantage.
Once you crest the hill, the rest of the hole reveals itself. With a good drive, this is a great scoring chance.
Be careful of being above the hole on this heavily pitched green.
Hole 15 – 162 yards – Par 3 – Pop’s Pride
The large green can lull you to sleep on this tee shot. However, you don’t want to get going too far to the left.
Hole 16 – 290 yards – Par 4 – Sunset
Longer players can challenge this green. It plays longer than the yardage with the second half of the hole playing uphill. For everyone laying up, avoiding the bunkers is paramount.
Hole 17 – 450 yards – Par 5 – Sea Turn
My hosts were quick to tell me about the pesky trees on the left side of this hole. If you tangle with them, a short par five becomes a much harder scoring hole.
Hole 18 – 320 yards – Par 4 – Home
The final hole at Webhannet Golf Club gives you an opportunity to finish the round on a high note. With a wide fairway and ample green, you can swing freely and try to stick your shot close.
Webhannet is another course in the stable of quintessential New England golf. It’s not a course that will show up on any big publication’s ranking, but it is full of charm and a delightful walk. Courses like this are the backbone of the region and golf at large. I really enjoyed my time here.
