I struggled to find any history on Mid Carolina Club.  I looked over their website, but there isn’t much there aside from the founding year of 1968.

That being said, I have my own history as does my wife.  I have driven past this course countless times and always wondered what it would be like to play.  My gaze wasn’t from inaccessibility, as the course is semi-private, but just the desire to see a new course.

My wife’s history with the course dates to her competing on it during high school golf tournaments.  There’s not many courses she has played that I haven’t, so I had to rectify that!

I’d always meant to play the course but circumstances had intervened.  Luckily, my friend Luke’s dad is a member and we were able to set up a time this past March.

Luke is one of my new golf friends I’ve made through No Laying Up.  During the pandemic, I’ve made these so-called “internet friends” through Zoom and a lively message board.  Since golf has been a safe activity, I’ve gotten the privilege to meet many of them in person.  It’s been an enriching experience in an otherwise difficult time.

Luke has become a fast friend and I’m glad I know him.  Alright, enough of the sappy stuff 😂.  Let’s get to the golf!

I didn’t do the full, start to finish course tour on this one.  I did get some shots to give you a general overview of the course.  Below is the dogleg left second hole where good drives leave you a short iron into the green.  Special appearance from Luke.

Below is one of the par threes.  I enjoyed them as a set.

Mid Carolina has plenty of doglegs.  A few too many to the right for this perpetual non-fader, but I did like the mix of directions.

The area below was my favorite on the course.  I love seeing multiple holes from one spot.  Water isn’t my favorite feature on golf courses, but I though it framed everything well here.

I’ve given you a lot of good so far on Mid Carolina Club.  I’d be lying if I didn’t say there was some bad.  It has some truly quirky/awful holes.  For example, the one below.  You can see the green through the trees, but the path is a 90 degree dogleg left.  The approach plays up a steep hill to a shallow green with runoffs.  It’s a bad hole, period.

We get back to normal with this one.

Mid Carolina Club is a fun layout that provides enough challenge for the modest length.  There is a true variety of holes and I thought water was used well throughout.  For a relatively out of the way course, the conditioning was quite good.  Aside from a rainstorm pelting the course the day before, the greens rolled true and most of the playing surfaces were well maintained.

If you live anywhere near the area, Mid Carolina Club is definitely worth checking out.  The deal will be good and you’ll get to see some interesting golf holes.  If you can play it with your buddies, even better!
