It’s a nice occasion when someone reaches out to me via my site or social media.  That contact led to a round on the Crabapple course at Capital City Club.  I was happy to make the drive down to the Atlanta area to check the course out.

I’d heard of the course from Tiger Woods winning a World Golf Championship – American Express event there in 2003.  However, the club history goes back much longer than that.  The club was chartered way back in 1883.  Since it’s inception the downtown location of the club has hosted titans of industry, presidents, and foreign dignitaries.

A few times over the years a second course was proposed.  It finally came to fruition in 2002.  Almost 20 years later, I found myself on the first tee, ready to check the Crabapple course out personally.

We played the blue tees and all yardages are from those markers.

Hole 1 – 392 yards – Par 4

This slight dogleg right is no beast to start the round.  A wide fairway and generous green should have you feeling fine.

There is, however, some good slope to the putting surface.

Hole 2 – 385 yards – Par 4

A fade helped you on the last hole, but the draw fits better here.  Best stay out of the right rough or you’ll face an awkward sidehill lie.

Hole 3 – 193 yards – Par 3

I found this one played less than the yardage, but not a crazy amount.  The green is massive and you can get stuck with some truly long putts.

Hole 4 – 529 yards – Par 5

For me, this is a true three shot hole.  A couple of good pokes are needed to have a short approach.

Hole 5 – 305 yards – Par 4

I was comfortable playing for a good approach yardage from this tee.  That meant less than driver and a shot into the fairway.

The green is an inviting target from the tee or fairway.

But you don’t want to go long.

Hole 6 – 169 yards – Par 3

You can see it all here.  This right pin is for suckers.  Safe and to the middle is a good enough strategy.

Hole 7 – 359 yards – Par 4

The bunkers on the right are meant to catch you cutting the corner.  Avoid them unless you can safely carry them.  The rest of the hole is pretty straightforward after the bend right.

Hole 8 – 432 yards – Par 4

The length is enough of a challenge here that Fazio left out bunkers.  The hole bends left and rises to the green.  I was lucky enough to squeeze one on the green.

Hole 9 – 501 yards – Par 5

The rough encroaches on the left side here and that’s where I found myself.  There was no going for it out of the lie.  Left is better than right here though.

Hole 10 – 437 yards – Par 4

The back side starts off with a stern test.  The hole bends right just a bit as it goes down the hill.  Bunkers come into play throughout on this long par four.

Hole 11 – 391 yards – Par 4

On this dogleg right the fairway bunkers served as a good aiming point for me.  You can cut off some distance if you go a little right, but the risk didn’t make sense to me.

Hole 12 – 484 yards – Par 5

Now is the time to put the hammer down.  After the drive, you have to make a decision between two paths to the green.  The right side gives you a better look and is generally the safer play.

Below is the view from the right side.

And this is the view from the left.  Just a bit trickier.

Hole 13- 135 yards – Par 3

With this pin, it’s go time.  If you find yourself in the bunker though, par will be a difficult task.

Hole 14 – 421 yards – Par 4

The view from this tee makes you want to pound driver.  Don’t flare it right in the trees like me though!

Hole 15 – 190 yards – Par 3

Nothing surprising here, just a hard hole to make par.

Hole 16 – 486 yards – Par 5

Both my playing partner and I made messes of this hole if I recall.  I aimed at the bunker assuming I wouldn’t hit it…wrong!  If you can get one in the fairway, birdie is a real possibility.

Hole 17 – 423 yards – Par 4

The penultimate hole starts the demanding finishing stretch.  Main goal here is to hit a long drive that avoids the bunkers.  After that, the green is open in front and provides some shot options.

Hole 18 – 431 yards – Par 4

The closer you can get to the left bunker the better off you will be on your approach shot.  At best, you’ll catch some downslope and score a few extra yards on your drive.

The green is really long so make note of the pin position.

We had a steamy day at the Crabapple Course at Capital City Club, but the humidity didn’t take away from a fun day with a new golf friend.

The course was in excellent shape and I felt it didn’t beat me up too bad.  There was a good mix of difficult and gettable holes.  Also, a lack of many forced carries was a welcome sight.  All in all, a fun day in Georgia!
