Mammoth Dunes was our second round at Sand Valley Resort. This David McLay Kidd layout is known for its wide fairways and inviting greens. The course funnels your ball instead of repelling it. You can score here but it’s not a pushover.
With four sets of rated hybrid tees, golfers have many options to play. I like giving everyone comfortable yardage to choose from.
One quick note on the photos. I was enjoying the day and didn’t have the camera out, so I stuck to my phone. So there are fewer photos, but hopefully, you get a feel for the course.
Let’s get into the tour.
Hole 1 – 394 yards – Par 4
From the beginning, you are introduced to the scale at Mammoth Dunes. This is not a tight, penal course in the slightest.
Hole 2 – 406 yards – Par 4
The fairways are wide but so are the bunkers. There’s room to maneuver but plenty of challenges to par.
Hole 3 – 489 yards – Par 5
Mammoth Dunes has a lot of scoring holes. This short par five is certainly one of them.
Hole 4 – 181 yards – Par 3
Do not go right here. The ample room on the left around the tree makes a right miss very bad.
Hole 6 – 308 yards – Par 4
With firm ground, this hole played a lot less than the listed yardage. Don’t go long though. One of my playing partners hit a great ball that we never found.
Hole 7 – 524 yards – Par 5
This will be a three-shot hole for many. The second shot is blind and there is plenty of sand to avoid.
Hole 8 – 175 yards – Par 3
This big target plays slightly downhill. You know what to avoid here.
Hole 9 – 423 yards – Par 4
The front finishes with a challenging hole that bends slightly to the right.
Hole 10 – 323 yards – Par 4
As you’ve seen so far, Mammoth Dunes is very wide and forgiving. But if you are way off or don’t execute, you can make bogies. I thought it straddled the line quite well. The tenth is another example of that.
Hole 11 – 505 yards – Par 5
I missed the tee shot photos here but did get a look at the green.
Hole 13 – 126 yards – Par 3
I can tell you from experience that you do not want to be over this green. Deep bunkers make a par hard to come by from back there.
Hole 14 – 297 yards – Par 4
Birdie time! This hole is begging you to go for it. If you miss, however, you’ll likely have a tricky bunker shot.
Hole 15 – 509 yards – Par 5
Keep it out of the left trees here and this hole is much easier.
Hole 16 – 164 yards – Par 3
The bunkers obscure the view of the green a little bit. I found myself up against a tree and having to play a left-handed chip!
Hole 17 – 427 yards – Par 4
This one is a long and straightaway test.
Hole 18 – 511 yards – Par 5
Bouncing drives make this one reachable in two. We even had a tap-in eagle in our group right when the weather warning horn blew.
With the weather delaying our tee time and the horn sounding right as we finished, I was happy to get the round in at Mammoth Dunes. As I’ve said, it is a very forgiving course yet still presents challenges if you’re not in the right spots. Pars/birdies could be had and there aren’t many doubles likely. It’s a good complement to the Sand Valley course.
