Pinehurst #10 is the newest addition to the famed Pinehurst Resort’s golf catalog. It is the first new-build course added to the resort since the 1990s. I got a chance to see it on a trip earlier this year.
#10 sits a few miles from the main resort property and is built on a site that was once a sand mine. The site was once home to The Pit golf course that was closed in 2010. I’m sure some of you out there might have played it, but I sadly never got the chance.
It is situated on a massive site with #11 already being constructed there by Coore & Crenshaw. With the course being so new, there is no history to speak of. Let’s get right into the tour.
Hole 1 – 400 yards – Par 4
This is a wide fairway on a hole that bends to the right. Swing away with the driver here.
If you miss anywhere on the approach, it should be short. Recoveries from that area are quite straightforward, much more so than over the back.
Hole 2 – 163 yards – Par 3
There is a big ridge that bisects this green from front to back. The hole becomes much easier if you are on the proper tier.
The photo below shows just how difficult the sloping on this green can be.
Hole 3 – 532 yards – Par 5
This will be a three shot hole for many players. It bends slightly left to a green that sits tucked among trees and waste areas. It’s imperative to stay out of the large waste area on the left with your tee shot.
Depending on where your third shot ends up, the green may be obscured from view.
Once you do see it, the sloping comes into view and you can survey just how complicated your putt might be.
Hole 4 – 308 yards – Par 4
Your club selection on this tee will shape how you play the hole. If you’re laying up, the middle pot bunker must be taken into account. If you are pushing it up as far as you can, stay up the right side to avoid the big bunker on the left.
The run up to this green is inviting for anyone trying to drive it on.
Hole 5 – 374 yards – Par 4
This hole moves slightly left but features a big fairway that should free you up with a driver.
We’ve got another green obscured by slopes here. As you can imagine, the green itself is also quite contoured as we’ll see.
If your approach is not on point, you will be putting up quite a ridge.
Hole 6 – 437 yards – Par 4
I found out that you can run out of room on the left with a poor drive. Anywhere in the fairway sets you up for a good look at this green.
The front bunker is obviously a big red X in your yardage book. Luckily, the green is a pretty large target so you have some margin for error.
Hole 7 – 122 yards – Par 3
With a shorter par three, you’d expect a tricky green. That is exactly what you get here. There is a great deal of slope and you must control your spin. It’s difficult to get shots close here.
Hole 8 – 357 yards – Par 4
This hole can be perplexing on your first go around Pinehurst #10. The tee shot is completely blind and the approach may be partially blind depending on your drive. The best play is over the dune which was left over from the site’s previous life as a sand mine.
If you end up on the right side of the fairway, the green will be much more visible. The amount of fairway mounding here is crazy.
Not to be outdone, the green features heavy contours itself. You won’t have many flat putts here unless you are close to the hole.
Hole 9 – 439 yards – Par 4
It’s time to uncork a good drive here. Take note of the distance to the bunkers so you can play around or over them.
With the slope of the hole, the second shot can be on the longer side. There is room on the right that slopes towards the green that you can use to your advantage.
Hole 10 – 585 yards – Par 5
This is the hole I had seen and heard about prior to my visit. It’s long and was playing into the wind on this day. The fairway is wide but you can run into scrub and wiregrass on the left side.
Avoid the bunkers on your second shot and you might have a good shot at birdie on this brute.
With a long hole, the green doesn’t overly punish missed shots but it is not easy. The greenside bunker can test you and short grass surrounds will require creative recovery shots if you miss the green.
Hole 11 – 170 yards – Par 3
This slightly elevated green tilts from right to left. Left misses are going to run away from the green and leave difficult second shots. If you find the bunker to the right, you’ll be staring downhill to the hole with a runoff behind. It’s a lot of subtle trouble that can add up to a big number.
Hole 12 – 494 yards – Par 5
We’ve got another blind landing area here. While it may appear wide, the best line is up the right side over the waste bunker because room on the left runs out quickly.
The green is ripe for the picking with virtually nothing to stop you. If you can get on or close, this is your best birdie chance of the day.
Hole 13 – 483 yards – Par 4
Pinehurst #10 gives and she takes. After a short, gettable par five, you are met with a massive par four that is not much shorter than the previous hole. Par is just a number anyway man! As for how to play the tee shot, powerful and favoring the right side will set you up well.
As you can see, I did not follow my own advice.
The green, as expected on this long of a hole, is a large target. You can run up your approach shot, which will be a welcome sight for many players with a long iron or wood in their hand.
Hole 14 – 224 yards – Par 3
This is a wild green for such a long hole. There is a lot of slope both on and around the putting surface. Your best miss is going to be short and right.
The photo below illustrates what I was saying about the green. Look at all that contouring!
Hole 15 – 361 yards – Par 4
I missed the tee shot, but this is a dogleg right where you must decide how much of the water you want to take on.
Approach shots play to a multi-layered green with water to the right. Shots that miss left have to play downhill and will need great touch.
Hole 16 – 443 yards – Par 4
If you’ve got a draw with the driver, now is the time to use it. This hole bends left and features a crowned fairway.
You can probably figure out that there is a drop-off on the left and back of the green. As a result, many players will come up short here and there is nothing wrong with that miss.
You can see from the next couple photos just how difficult the left side of this green can be.
Hole 17 – 142 yards – Par 3
The green is the star of the show on this one-shot hole. There are a few sections where balls will funnel and set up great looks at birdie. However, if you find yourself in the wrong section, putting can be quite a chore.
As you get closer, the mounding comes into view and let’s you know what you’re in for.
Just take this whole green in and think about all the putts and recovery shots it can offer.
Hole 18 – 405 yards – Par 4
The final drive plays over a large waste area, but good strikes will clear it easily. Favoring the right side should lead to a flatter lie and keep you away from the sand on the left.
The approach plays to a green that has no hazards aside from a bunker well behind it. That does not mean it is easy because there is plenty of slope around it to test you.

Pinehurst #10 was quite the course! Doak creations are not always my favorite, but I thought he and his team did a great job with this property. Adding a Coore & Crenshaw course will make this standalone facility a busy spot for Pinehurst visitors. Check this place out whenever you can!
