2019 Golf Year In Review

2019 was a year full of change for me.  I hope to get into that a bit in some future posts, so stay tuned.  As in years past, plenty of golf was played.  I liked the format of 2018’s Year In Review, so we’re doubling down on it.  Here’s my 2019 Golf Year in Review.

New Courses Played

I played 20 new golf courses this past year.  I’ve listed them all below.  Some have links to the posts that have already gone up on the site.  Look out for the others in the coming weeks!  This was the exact same number of new courses that I played in 2018, weird.

Of these courses, lucky number 13 were from my quest.  Not a bad year at all!

  1. Yeamans Hall Club
  2. Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead)
  3. Streamsong (Black)
  4. Temple Terrace Country Club
  5. Eagle Point Golf Club
  6. Erin Hills
  7. The Bull at Pinehurst Farms
  8. Whistling Straits (Straits)
  9. Whistling Straits (Irish)
  10. Blackwolf Run (River)
  11. Blackwolf Run (Meadow Valleys)
  12. Milwaukee Country Club
  13. Ridgewood Country Club (East/West)
  14. Hudson National Golf Club
  15. Caves Valley Golf Club
  16. Baker Hill Golf Club
  17. Montcalm Golf Club
  18. Old Town Club
  19. City Club Marietta
  20. Bobby Jones Golf Course

Tally of New People Met

I had made a resolution to be better about remembering the new people I played with in 2019.  I did ok with this, we’ll say I got a B.  I even did a post about some of the new people.  You can check it out here.

In my normal rounds, I played with 35 new people, if memory serves.  The wrinkle this year is that I attended my first No Laying Up gathering.  This added about 40 others to my tally.  That was a special day.

Best Round (Performance)

It was an interesting year for my golf.  My scoring average edged up and I had some bad rounds.  Even so, I shot 73 a few times.  Two were at local courses and one was at a course in New Hampshire that I had played growing up.

I finally got some lessons towards the end of the year.  Hopefully, there will be more to report here in 2020.  Either way, I will enjoy my time on the course regardless of the score.

Highlight Experiences

There are so many, but here we go.

  • Playing Yeamans Hall on my birthday with a new friend I was paired with randomly when I played Homestead (Cascades) the year before.
  • Experiencing some good Florida golf with my buddy Chris.  Streamsong Black was a roller coaster!
  • Finally meeting Tim and playing a super charming old Florida country club.
  • Playing Erin Hills with John Morrisett.  His knowledge was a fantastic addition to the round.
  • Meeting up with Instagram buds for golf.  Shout out to Will and Cory.  Click their names to check them out on IG!
  • Playing my first ThousandGreens round with a fellow Clemson Tiger.  It was a joy to watch Will pound the ball.
  • Getting to play with Nik again in New Hampshire.  Sometimes you find people who are a blast to hang with.  Nik is one!
  • Experiencing Old Town for the first time with Cory and Will (different Will).
  • The NLU meetup was spectacular.  We had the course rented out for about 40 people.  We played different formats and had a great day of fellowship.  Simply incredible!

Best Revisit

This was a little tougher than the previous year.  I’d have to say Manchester Country Club takes the cake.  This old Donald Ross has undergone plenty of work and it shows in a good way!

This & That

  • Longest Distance Traveled to Play – Southeast New Hampshire
  • Lowest Score – 73 (a few times)
  • Biggest Surprise – Ridgewood (East/West)
  • Best New Course Played – Yeamans Hall

Here’s hoping 2020 is just as fulfilling.  It will likely be different, again, more on that later.  I’m continually amazed at the quality of golf in this country.  That is only exceeded by the people I meet playing this crazy game.  The scarcity of jerks is astounding.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who helped out with my golf quest this year.  It is impossible to do this without you.

Thanks for reading and I hope I can tee it up with you soon!
