2018 Golf Year in Review

2018 was a really fun year of golf!  I got to play a lot of new golf courses, which we’ll get to in a bit.  I’m going to change up the year-end post a bit on this one.  In the past, I’ve mentioned courses on the quest I’ve played and what’s coming up.  I’ll still do that, but I wanted to add some content and fill you in on 2019.  So what new content?  Let’s get into it!  Here’s my 2018 Golf Year in Review.

New Courses Played

I got in 20 new golf courses this past year.  I’ve listed them below.  Some have links to the posts that have already gone up on the site.  Look out for the others in the coming weeks!

Of these courses, 15 were courses from my quest.  I will take that progress every year!

  1. Bulle Rock
  2. Baltimore Country Club (East)
  3. San Francisco Golf Club
  4. Lake Merced Golf Club
  5. Grayhawk Golf Club (Talon)
  6. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Cholla)
  7. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Saguaro)
  8. Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
  9. Troon North Golf Club (Monument)
  10. Troon North Golf Club (Pinnacle)
  11. TPC Southwind
  12. Mossy Oak Golf Club
  13. Old Waverly Golf Club
  14. Old Sandwich Golf Club
  15. Kingsmill Resort (River)
  16. Nemacolin Woodlands Resort (Mystic Rock)
  17. The Homestead (Cascades)
  18. The Cliffs at Glassy
  19. Vesper Country Club
  20. Kittansett Club

Tally of New People Met

I’m pretty good with names, but I don’t always get them all.  By my rough count, I played with 36 new people!  In 2019, I’m going to try to be more intentional about remembering specific experiences.

Shout outs to everyone from the above 36, that I will definitely be seeing again.  You guys know who you are.

Best Round (Performance)

This is a tie for me.  I shot even par a few times throughout the year, but two stood out.  At Homestead (Cascades) and Vesper Country Club, I shot 72 having never seen the course.  I put everything together during these rounds.

I am especially proud of the Vesper round because it was a cold, rainy New England day and I birdied the first and last hole on the day. Shout out to Nik for shepherding me around.

Highlight Experiences

There are so many, but here we go.

  • Eating the signature paper steak sandwich and chilling at the locker room fireplaces at San Francisco Golf Club.  Then finishing the day at Lake Merced.
  • Finding a random South Carolina connection with my group at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, not to mention they were great guys.
  • Meeting a couple awesome, older gentleman at We-Ko-Pa (Cholla).
  • Meeting up with Instagram buds for a golf trip.  Shout out to Mike, Brian, and James.  Click their names to check them out on IG!
  • Watching John drain everything on the greens at Old Sandwich.  Awesome day here thanks to our host.
  • Watching an enthusiastic, but not so great golfer hole out for birdie at Nemacolin.  Pure joy!
  • Making a great connection at Homestead (Cascades).
  • Meeting and playing with my dude Nik.  Looking forward to more rounds!
  • Meeting up with Patrick Koenig to join the RGV Tour.  It was awesome to contribute to the cause!

Best Revisit

I got back to a handful of courses I had played before.  Two stood out above the rest.  You can probably guess, but they’re Cal Club and Sweetens Cove.

These two places just speak to me.  They exude golf and fun.  The architecture is awesome.  But most of all, the people that form my connection to these places are great.  I would join these two places tomorrow if I could.

This & That

  • Longest Distance Traveled to Play – San Francisco, CA
  • Lowest Score – 72 (a few times)
  • Biggest Surprise – Mossy Oak GC
  • Best New Course Played – San Francisco GC

Finally, I want to thank everyone who helped out with my golf quest this year.  It is impossible to do this without you.

I am thankful for all the people that reached out or reacted to my post about my Grampa.  He was my entry into this great game.  I will always miss him but am glad he is no longer suffering.

So like my beloved New England Patriots, we are onto 2019.  I have already played one course from the quest and am working on more.  This year, I hope to take better notes and share more in-depth experiences with you guys.

Thanks for reading and I hope I can tee it up with you soon!
